Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation

Confirmation is one of the three Sacraments of Christian Initiation, together with Baptism and the Eucharist. Through Confirmation, a baptized person is strengthened by the Holy Spirit and receives a special outpouring of the Spirit’s gifts.

Confirmation deepens and strengthens the grace received at Baptism. Through this sacrament, the faithful are more closely united to Christ and to His Church and are strengthened to live as faithful disciples and witnesses of Christ in the world.

Confirmation is celebrated because Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to His disciples. At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and gave them courage and strength to proclaim the Gospel. In Confirmation, Catholics receive that same Holy Spirit and are strengthened to carry out their Christian vocation.

The sacrament calls us to:

  • Grow deeper in our relationship with Christ
  • Receive and cooperate with the gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Strengthen our faith
  • Stand as witnesses to the Gospel
  • Participate more fully in the life and mission of the Church
  • Live our faith through service and love of others

Confirmation is not simply a graduation from religious education or a ceremony marking the end of classes. It is a sacrament through which God strengthens us with the Holy Spirit and calls us to live our faith more fully.
